Radioactive Legacy

Relatively few people in St. Louis know that materials needed to produce World War II-era nuclear weapons were processed in their region. Because the remnants of these materials were improperly stored and disposed of, they contaminated several locations in or near residential areas, including a creek and a landfill. Local residents, blaming the radioactive waste for higher cancer rates and lower property values in their neighborhoods, are lobbying for various governmental actions to remedy the contamination.
